Though it played great now and felt east to play with lots of natural sustain, I decided to bug it out a little bit. Starting with vintage Japan made Vox style pick-up in the neck position and a couple vintage capacitors. A bumble bee 22mf capacitor for the neck humbucker pick up and a 47mf mallard tropical fish for the single coils middle and bridge pick-up (these were still the stock cheapies) also a 500ka neck pot and 2 250ka middle and bridge pick-up
Turning this $20.00 Fender Starcaster Jem

As far as playability, when my friend found it in the thrift store it actually was not to bad, but yes the action was hard to play and had sharp fret ends. The pick ups were a bit harsh and tinny in the highs and it had sloppy lows.
Phase 2:
The frets were tapped down on the ends only with a brass hammer, very gently. then I did a fret dress and polish and soaked the neck with lemon oil. A quick neck adjustment and at this point it was ready put together and play. The guitar really play nice, with good resonance and character.
